Alumni in Action

GLA encourages its students to stay involved in issues they learned about during their program. Each month, we highlight the efforts of one of our alumni. Have a story to tell? Send us an email!

“Thank you for allowing me to participate in such an inspirational program. I just wanted to let you know that my GLA experience did not end when I returned to the United States.”

Student: Emily Bieniek

High School: University of Chicago Lab Schools (Chicago, IL)

Emily started Ubuntu Designs, an organization that produces cool t-shirts with social messages to raise awareness about HIV / AIDS in Africa. Profits from the sale of shirts goes to the JL Zwane Centre in South Africa, a GLA partner organization.

The group started out with no money. They held a bake-sale to raise start-up funds, and they made $80 which they used to purchase the initial supplies and blank t-shirts.

On their first day in business, they made $650 in t-shirt sales. They donated 30% of the profit to the Centre and re-invested the rest into buying more t-shirts and a professional silkscreen equiptment.

Their hope is that they can ship these t-shirts to other high schools who want to sell the shirts and raise money for a good cause.

If you would like to get involved - search for "Ubuntu Design" on Facebook and join this worthwhile group.
